Welcome to Our Ibiza Life – A Journey from the Netherlands to the Heart of the Mediterranean

Hello, I’m Johnny Melten. My wife Varinia, our two bright children, Leyla Fay and Sonny, and I embarked on a life-changing relocation adventure, moving from the Netherlands to the vibrant and sunny shores of Ibiza in 2018. This decision to emigrate was fueled by our desire for better weather, a safer island life, the laid-back Spanish lifestyle, and, most importantly, a more fulfilling family life.

Why Ibiza Was Our Perfect Relocation Choice: After much contemplation, we realized Ibiza was the ideal destination for our emigration. This enchanting island offered everything we could wish for in a relocation – stunning beaches, a friendly and secure environment for raising children, a relaxed pace of life, and a rich cultural tapestry. The combination of natural beauty, warm Mediterranean climate, and the welcoming community made Ibiza an unbeatable destination for enhancing our family life.

The Year of Preparation: Our journey of relocating to Ibiza began a year before the actual move. We dedicated countless hours to research and made several reconnaissance trips to Ibiza as part of our emigration planning. Each visit deepened our bond with the island, transforming our perception from a holiday destination to our future home. We meticulously explored options for housing, suitable schools, local sports clubs, and other amenities, ensuring a smooth transition for our family.

Embracing the Ibiza Lifestyle: Upon our relocation, our children, then just 4 and 7 years old, seamlessly adapted to the local culture by attending public Spanish schools. This immediate immersion helped them quickly pick up the language and customs. Similarly, my wife and I took Spanish classes and integrated ourselves into the local community, initially avoiding the Dutch community to fully embrace the Ibicenco way of life.

Finding Balance in Community: A year after our relocation, we began to broaden our social circle, connecting with the international community as well as fellow Dutch expatriates. This mix of local and expatriate interactions enriched our Ibiza emigration experience, allowing us to enjoy the best of both worlds—embracing our new home while staying connected to our Dutch roots.

A Family United by Sport

Football and Padel – The Heart of Our Sporting Life in Ibiza: Amid our adaptation to a new country, we discovered Ibiza’s rich sports scene. Our relocation became even more rewarding when our kids, fervent football enthusiasts, integrated into the local football clubs. Ibiza’s football community, with eight spirited local clubs, including an impressive one in Formentera, quickly became a focal point of our weekends. Similarly, padel, a sport that’s gained immense popularity on the island, offered us a fantastic way to stay active, meet a diverse group of people, and engage in the community. The extensive padel facilities across Ibiza are a testament to the island’s commitment to health, wellness, and social connectivity.

A Life Transformed by Relocation

Years after our move, as we run a successful business and are deeply integrated into Ibiza’s international network, we can affirm that our emigration was a resounding success. Our children, benefiting from an education that blends Spanish and English, are growing up with a rich multicultural perspective, in a setting that’s proven to be safe and nurturing.
